Everyone can understand the language of dance, and in Kansas City, dance ranges from famous classical ballet troupes to amateur folk dance groups.

Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, 218 Delaware, (816) 471-6003. A support group for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble who perform at the Midland Theater. Outreach programs, in-school/after school dance workshops are presented by Ailey dance teachers.

Westport Ballet School, 3925 Main, (816) 531-4330. A semiprofessional ballet company performing a diverse and energetic repertoire, ranging from classical to contemporary ballet. An annual children's series is presented each spring at the Folly Theatre, and each summer the company presents its outdoor summer series, "Under the Stars," in Westport.
